Political Science: New York Times - complimentary online access

An introductory guide to general Political Science resources and databases.

General Info

USC Upstate Library provides current students, faculty, and staff complimentary access to The New York Times online. You may access your free subscription on- or off-campus by using any computer or mobile device. The subscription will include up-to-the-minute access to English, Chinese, and Spanish editions.

  • Access is valid for 365 days. After that time, re-registration is required for continued access. Access is limited to current students, faculty, and staff.
  • Our subscription includes podcasts, video content, newsletters, daily 360 content, a virtual reality app, cooking app, and limited archival article access dating back to 1851. Our subscription does not include access to premium crosswords.
  • Access to papers other than the current day's edition can be obtained via the Newspaper Source Plus database (search New York Times using the "Publications" link in the top toolbar and clicking on the desired issue), although there is a 48-hour delay in availability.
  • Archival article access is restricted to five articles per day per user. Our separate New York Times Historical Newspaper subscription is recommended for additional historical articles and is available on our A-Z Databases list.

Register and Re-Register Info

Troubleshooting and FAQs

  • Why can't I log in?
Check to see if the account has been registered.
  • Why am I sometimes asked to log in even though I've registered before?
Browser cache/history may have cleared and passwords were deleted. Visit https://www.nytimes.com/ and log back in.
  • Why can't I download as many archival articles as I want?
The Library's subscription is geared toward current, up-to-the-minute access to breaking news. Archival articles may be accessed on a very limited basis, but for more complete research, visit New York Times Historical Newspaper subscription, which covers events from 1851-2014 (available on A-Z Databases list).
  • How do I get mobile apps?
After registering, open the newspaper's virtual front page, click the "mobile apps" link to view all available apps. Many of these may be downloaded directly to your mobile devices (some, like Crosswords, are not part of the library's subscription). These apps may not be supported on all devices.
  • Can I share my login information with anyone?
No. Sharing your login with those who are not current faculty, staff, or students is a violation of the University's license with The New York Times.
  • Still need more help?
Just contact a USC Upstate librarian in person or via 24/7 Ask for more information.
