Mimi the Possum visits the libraryThursday, February 29, offers your final opportunity to view the exhibit, Real People, Real Climate, Real Changes. On Friday, March 1, we'll begin the process of packing the exhibit and shipping it to its next location.

Over the last two months, it's been a joy for the library to host the exhibit, on loan by its creators, the National Science Center (NSF) National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) Center for Science Education. Hosting the exhibit also offered us a wonderful opportunity to collaborate with the university's Watershed Ecology Center, the Pollinator Garden, and other campus sustainability initiatives in an exhibit open house. And let's not forget the cuddly fun of getting to meet and greet a "real live" Mimi the Possum, a resident of the Watershed Ecology Center!

Importantly, we've also enjoyed hearing your impressions about the exhibit and the issues and challenges raised. Many of you answered the weekly question on climate change--either with thoughtful words or creative drawings. We've saved your responses and will share those with NCAR/UCAR. It shows the impact that the exhibit has had on you, the viewers.

While the exhibit is exiting the building, Professor Jenny Bonner's painting, "Conserve (Footprint)," will continue to grace our gallery wall for the next few weeks. This work, especially created by Professor Bonner for the exhibit, will eventually be sent to its permanent home at the National Center for Atmospheric Research.

The library is open on February 29 from 7:30 am to 12 midnight. We look forward to seeing you take one last look at Real People, Real Climate, Real Changes.

Celebrating Native American Heritage Month

by: Adrienne Fuehrer, USC Upstate Library Intern

The USC Upstate Library celebrates Native American Heritage Month with the creation of a new materials display. The titles honor the lived experiences of those cultures being represented. Students are encouraged to learn about indigenous history and culture. This collection focuses and emphasizes celebrating indigenous achievements, artwork, and stories, especially those from territories in and near the Carolinas.

Meet your USC Upstate Librarian during National Library Lover’s Month!

Blog post by Library Intern, Qwinlyn Osborne

Questions answered by Virginia Cononie; Coordinator of Research

  1. Most commonly asked question about the library?

“When we work at the research desk, we do get a good many repeated questions and that is okay! We love to serve our students and help them through any thing they are working on at the time. We get questions about printing, finding materials, resetting passwords and how to find classrooms. Students are never interrupting us at the desk. We love questions!”

  2.  What are you reading right now?

“I just finished reading the Perks of Being a Wallflower, and I started reading The Grief Club by Melody Beattie. I usually have anywhere between four or five books going at one time. Which admittedly can get confusing but seems to keep me pretty entertained.”

  3. What is something you want students to know about the library?

“The library can save you money.Never pay for articles online. Reach out to our 24/7 ask a librarian service and we will find it for you at no cost.”

All are standing in front of a green Upstate backdrop.Research and Instruction Librarian Allison Read has been recognized for her outstanding achievements in community engagement by USC Upstate faculty, staff, students, and community partners. She is this year's winner of the Faculty Excellence in Volunteerism Award. The award was presented to her on April 4 by Dr. Dave Marlow, Director of Engage Upstate: Service Learning & Community Engagement, at the USC Upstate Celebration of Community Engaged Education 2024.

Allison is actively engaged in several community initiatives both as a participant and as a leader. One of these is the Spartanburg Period Project. This organization provides menstrual products to people in need in Spartanburg County, especially in area schools. Allison volunteers with the Period Project throughout the year, creating menstrual product packs, which she then distributes to schools and community centers.

The USC Upstate Library holds an annual menstrual product drive each fall, collecting products and money from donors across campus. The library's Outreach Committee began this effort in 2020. Through the efforts of Allison and others, each year since the library has collected and distributed hundreds of dollars' worth of menstrual products to people in our community. The library has also hosted "period packing parties" at which library employees and other volunteers create menstrual product packs for distribution.

Allison also volunteers with the League of Women Voters, serving on the board of the Spartanburg County chapter. She is an active planner and participant in voter registration drives and has participated in voter registration drives at USC Upstate and at Spartanburg Methodist College.

Allison also contributes her professional expertise as a librarian to the Unitarian Universalist Church of Spartanburg (UUCS) Archives Committee. This committee maintains the history of the UUCS and ensures that the Spartanburg County Public Library has UUCS historical information in their archives.

Allison has served as a full-time Research and Instruction Librarian at USC Upstate since 2019.

Congratulations, Allison, on this much-deserved recognition!
