The Circulation Department at USC Upstate Library provides a multitude of services to patrons, including:

Check-Out Policies

General Check-Out Policies

  • Current USC Upstate students, faculty, and staff can borrow an unlimited number of most materials.
  • CarolinaCard ID is required.
  • Check out materials at the Circulation Desk.
  • Return items to the Circulation Desk, or to the book drop located outside (in the staff entrance alcove near the parking lot).
  • Student accounts are blocked from checkouts and renewals if:
    • overdue items are not returned or renewed within the appropriate grace period
    • overdue fines have accrued
  • Lost, unreturned, or damaged items are subject to replacement fees.

A CarolinaCard ID is required to check out materials at the USC Upstate Library. ID cards may be obtained at the Department of Public Safety office (219 N. Campus Blvd.).

Books
There is no limit to the number of books a USC Upstate student may check out. Books are loaned for three (3) weeks. Library fines must be paid and overdue materials returned before additional items may be checked out.

Audio-Visual Materials
Audio-visual materials include DVD/Blu-Ray, CDs, and VHS tapes. There is no limit to the number of A/V items a USC Upstate student may check out. A/V items are loaned for seven (7) days with no renewals. Library fines must be paid and overdue materials returned before additional items may be checked out.  DVD Viewing equipment is available through the Circulation Desk.

Renewal Policy 
A borrower may request a renewal at the Library by presenting their CarolinaCard ID at the Circulation Desk. The renewal period is three (3) weeks. One online renewal is permitted for books that are not overdue. Please use the following link to access your account: http://libcat.csd.sc.edu/patroninfo.

Fines 
The fine for overdue books is $0.25 per day per book. There is a seven (7) day grace period so that books returned one (1) to seven (7) days overdue have no fine. Books returned eight (8) days overdue have accrued a $2.00 fine (8 days x $0.25). There is no grace period for A/V materials, reserve items, and Inter-Library Loan items. The fine for A/V materials is $1.00 per day. The fine for reserves is $5.00 per day. The fine for Inter-Library Loan and PASCAL materials is $1.00 per day.

Other Library Materials 
Reference books, periodicals, and archival material are not eligible for checkout. Using your CarolinaCard ID, photocopies can be made on Library Multi-Function Printers.

Holds 
The Library is able to hold most materials for a period of three to seven days, which allows time for a CarolinaCard ID to be obtained or Library fines to be paid. 

A CarolinaCard ID is required to check out materials at the Library.

Books
Books are loaned for 120 days and can be renewed twice. 
There is no limit to the number of books a Faculty or Staff member can check out.

Audio-Visual Materials
A/V items can be checkout out for seven (7) days and can be renewed once.  There is no limit to the number of A/V items a Faculty or Staff member can check out.

Renewal Policy
Faculty and Staff members may request a renewal at the Library by presenting the material(s) at the Circulation Desk.  One online renewal is permitted for books that are not overdue.  

Reference Materials and Periodicals
These materials do not circulate, but exceptions to this policy are made on a case-by-case basis. 
Circulation staff will assist patrons with obtaining checkout permission.

Library Card 
Community borrowers are Spartanburg County residents who wish to check out books from USC Upstate Library.
Borrowers must be at least 16 years of age and present a valid picture ID bearing the current address.The non-refundable fee for a card is $25.00 annually. The card is valid for one year provided that the account remains in good standing. Cards are not transferable from one person to another. The Library reserves the right to deny borrowing privileges to those lacking proper identification.

Books 
Community borrowers may checkout three (3) books at a time. Library cards must be presented at the time of checkout. The loan period for books is three (3) weeks. Library fines must be paid and overdue materials returned before additional books may be checked out.

Audio-Visual Materials
A/V materials are not eligible for checkout to Community Borrowers. However, Community Borrowers may use A/V materials within the library.  If needed, viewing equipment can be provided at the Circulation Desk.

Reserve Materials
Use of reserve materials is limited to current USC Upstate faculty, staff and students.

Other Library Materials
Reference books, periodicals, and archival material are not eligible for checkout.  Printing services are not available for Community Borrowers.  However, Community Borrowers may use the Multi-Functional Printers in the library to scan-and-email or photocopy materials. The cost for photocopies is .10 per page with payment by cash or check.  Assistance with these services is available through the Circulation Desk.

Renewal Policy 
A borrower may request a renewal at the Library by presenting the book(s) and Library card at the Circulation Desk. The renewal period is three (3) weeks. Some items may not be eligible for renewal. If that is the case, you will be notified and the book(s) must be returned.

Fines 
The fine for overdue books is $0.25 per day per book. There is a three (3) day grace period so that books returned one (1) to three (3) days overdue have no fine. Books returned four (4) days overdue have accrued a $1.00 fine (4 days x $0.25).
