1. Research Paper Analysis

Assigned Week 3

You will read and respond to questions about a scholarly article that I provide on Blackboard. This assignment will help you learn how to identify key elements of a research article and begin the process of summarizing and synthesizing academic research.

2. Topic Selection and Justification

Assigned Week 4

You will select a communication-related topic (e.g., social media and Black men’s mental health, anti-plastic straw campaign posters, sports team Instagram accounts, the representation of plus-size women in film, etc.) for research and explain why this topic is important for anyone interested in communication, both lay people and communication researchers. You will use one of the communication theories discussed in this class to better understand this topic. 

From this assignment on, every subsequent assignment will build on the previous one. So, pick a topic you find interesting because you will be working on the same topic till the end of the course.

3. Reference list

Assigned Week 6

You will use the library databases Communication and Mass Media Complete and Academic Search Ultimate, as well as Google Scholar to shortlist seven influential sources on your topic that you will summarize in your next paper. Provide full APA format citations of seven sources you plan to use for this paper.

4. Final Literature Review

Assigned Week 11

You will conduct a literature review of peer-reviewed communication research. The literature review must focus on one theory discussed in this class and include a review of a specific body of research on the topic you have chosen to work on for this semester (e.g., social media and Black men’s mental health, anti-plastic straw campaign posters, sports team Instagram accounts, the representation of plus size women in film, etc.). Papers should be roughly 6 pages, double-spaced. Papers should discuss a minimum of 7 peer-reviewed journal articles.
