SPCH U201: Foundations in Oral Communication: Using Language Effectively

Notes

Word choice is important in writing and speeches.  Words chosen for a written essay will vary from words designed to be spoken.  Speeches should be more casual and sound conversational than something written. Another hint to remember is the use of repetition as an aid to help your audience retain what you have told them.

  • Use appropriate language - know your audience (Be careful not to talk over or down to your audience)
  • Use concise language - make each word count
  • Use vivid language - help your audience see what you want them to see
  • keep technical language and jargon for the experts - if your audience is experts then use jargon if not stay away from technical language
  • Stay away from confusing or lofty language - don't use multi-syllable or words you don't usually use.
