Bio: Nicole is a middle-level education major at USC Upstate, having earned hours of field experience at schools in Spartanburg districts. She is working towards a Bachelor’s Degree, which is aimed to be completed by the end of the Spring 2024 semester. With her content area being social studies, this project has opened Nicole up to collaboration with and resources from university faculty and librarians, as well as enabled her with useful tools for transcribing, researching, and analyzing historical documents.

Lindsay Gibbs - HIST 325

Major: Middle Level Education

 

Bio: Lindsay is a senior at the University of South Carolina Upstate pursuing a degree in middle level education with a concentration in social studies. This project has given her more experience with researching history, which she hopes to implement in her own classroom, in order to create a hands-on learning approach for her students.

Sophia Hunsicker - HIST 325

Bio: Sophia is a senior attending the University of South Carolina Upstate and is majoring in History. She was involved in the previous LibGuide for Margaret Payne, and takes pleasure in giving a voice to individual's narratives from the past, all while embracing historical events that may have been overlooked.

Lauren Thrasher - HIST 325

Major: Secondary Education - History

Bio: Lauren is a Junior attending the University of South Carolina Upstate. Lauren is majoring in secondary education with a concentration in history. She intends to pursue a career as a history teacher. This project was a fun and eye-opening opportunity for Lauren. Engaging in a course that focused on research and letter transcribing allowed her to broaden her skills. The skills acquired in this course will benefit Lauren throughout her career.

Jordan Wilmoth - HIST 325

Major: History

Bio: Jordan is a junior attending the University of South Carolina Upstate majoring in History and seeking to pursue a minor or cognate in Art History. As someone who is very invested in World War Two history, this project has allowed her to explore first-hand accounts of people experiencing these events and gain a deeper understanding of them. While not entirely sure what exactly she would like to do after college, she wants to find a career where she can apply her passion for history such as archival work or teaching history to others.  

Olivia Bonilla - HIST 325

Major: Accounting

Bio: Olivia Bonilla is a sophomore attending the University of South Carolina Upstate majoring in accounting. She is working towards a Bachelor's degree in accounting and will be doing a dual degree program in Germany for the 2025-2026 academic year. According to Olivia, the libguides constructed and created during this course were fascinating to learn and research. Throughout this course, there are skills and techniques that Olivia can carry with her throughout the rest of her educational journey.

Dylan Harrelson - HIST 325

Minor: Criminal Justice

Bio: Dylan is a senior currently at USC Upstate with a major in History while also minoring in Criminal Justice. This learning experience has given him the opportunity to forward his research and writing skills along with learning more about the history of Upstate South Carolina. He is hopeful that all the information gathered for this database will be of great use to future students from both Upstate and other colleges.

Jordan McDonald - HIST 325

Major: Psychology

Bio: Jordan is a senior attending USC Upstate majoring in Experimental Psychology. She is currently working in a neuroscience lab at USC Upstate using an EEG machine to research feedback related negativity with stereotype threat. She believes working with the Service Learning Project will improve her ability in the research setting because it gives her the ability to make connections between past research and current fields. 

Edwin Waters - HIST 325

Minor: Education and Philosophy

 

Bio: Edwin is a junior attending the University of South Carolina Upstate majoring in History and minoring in Education. In the past he has considered teaching in public schools as a social studies teacher, teaching in higher education, working in human resources, library science/archival fields, but is now on a path towards working in higher education within student success resources.

With his last project being the Margaret Payne libguide he did extensive research and provided continuity with the letters being worked on for HIST 391. As for this course, HIST 325, Edwin has been working on other projects within the university archives so he has mostly engaged in this libguide as a student.

Hollis Brown - HIST 325

Bio: Hollis is a senior at the University of South Carolina Upstate majoring in History and minoring in Education. Taking part in this project has given him the opportunity to work with historical documents and do hands on research.

Lauren Henderson - HIST 391, HIST 499, HIST 391

Minor: Political Science

 

Bio: Lauren is a senior at the University of South Carolina Upstate majoring in History and minoring in Political Science. This Service Learning project and the Internship have given her the opportunity to work closely with historical documents and uncover new histories that can be featured in digital exhibits. After transcribing over a hundred documents, Lauren has been introduced to the world of historic preservation, and can potentially pursue a career in this field.

Timiesha Moore - HIST 325

Bio: Timiesha is a senior attending the University of South Carolina Upstate. She is majoring in History with a minor in Education. The opportunity to participate in this project was a unique experience. To go back in time and learn new things during the time periods was very fascinating. 

Ryleigh Watson - HIST 325

Major:  English and History

Bio: Ryleigh Watson is a senior attending the University of South Carolina Upstate. She is majoring in both English and History. Partaking in the project gave her a great deal of experience with the technicalities of historical transcription and digital technology. She enjoyed being able to relate the places, people, and events of the letters to the modern-day, as well as the actual transcribing. She found the experience invaluable for her future in museums.

Izabella White - HIST 325

Major: History

Bio: Izabella, or Bella, is a Senior attending the University of South Carolina Upstate majoring in History. She intends to pursue a career as a history teacher after obtaining a Master's Degree in Education. This project has been a great opportunity to explore specific areas in women's war history and taught her quite a bit about research compilation and presentation. The experience gained from this project will be an asset as she persues higher education and throughout her career.
