Highlights

April 1974, Pages 1 and 3:  The Shield promotes health and safety measures at Spartan Mills, including hearing tests for employees working in loud environments and accident prevention training for supervisors. See also: March 1972 Edition.

April 1974, Page 4: In October 1973, the 1973 Arab-Israeli War began with the invasion of Israel by Egypt and Syria. In response to the United States’ support of Israel, Arab members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) cut oil production and instituted an embargo on oil shipments to the United States and several other countries. As a result of the embargo, which lasted until March 1974, oil prices increased dramatically, triggering a recession and prompting a newfound focus on domestic energy independence. The Shield notes Spartan Mills’ attempts to save fuel and increase energy efficiency, such as the use of only one boiler (rather than two) over the winter. It also implores employees to take similar steps at home.

October 1974, Pages 1 and 5: Political connections come into focus in these pages of The Shield, with a visit from state legislators and members of the South Carolina Textile Manufacturers Association. The state legislators pictured are Spartanburg Representative Thomas Walter Edwards, Jr. and Union Senator John David Long III, both members of the South Carolina General Assembly Textile Study Committee.

October 1974, Page 3: On this page, The Shield notes Spartan Mills’ sponsorship of a new Junior Achievement (JA) Company Program® for local high school students. See also: February 1973.
