TIPS

  • Place keywords in quotation marks to search for an exact phrase.
    Example: "south carolina"
  • Boolean operators (use capital letters):
    • AND - all terms must be found; narrows a search
      Example: television AND violence
    • OR - any of the terms may be found; expands a search
      Example: "mass media" OR television
    • NOT - excludes the terms
      Example: mexico NOT "new mexico"
  • Use an asterisk (*) to search for different variations or spellings of a word.
Example: teen* - teen, teens, teenage, teenager, teenagers, etc.

Upstate and Beyond

USC Upstate has rich book and ebook collections, but we don't have everything! As your needs grow, you may find that you need to look beyond our own resources and borrow books from other academic libraries. That is why we introduce PASCAL Delivers, a rapid book delivery service that is a partnership among South Carolina academic libraries. If you are new to Upstate, or want to brush up on ways to improve searching the Library Catalog, the Find a Book videos will prove useful.

eBook Information

Electronic books are accessed through the library catalog record. In a list of results they are identified by [electronic resource] following the title and by USC Upstate Electronic Books under location. To read an electronic book:

  • If you are off campus, click on the box Off-Campus Access when you open the Library Catalog and log in with your username and password. This will ensure that links to e-books will work.
  • Click on the title in the results list. This opens the record for the book.
  • Click on the link under "Connect To" in the record.
  • If the book is from Netlibrary (and most of our e-books are) this will open a page for the book in Netlibrary. Click on "View this ebook" to read the book.
  • When finished reading a Netlibrary book, be sure to click on "close item."
