Keep Your Sources Organized

You may have noticed when reviewing the plagiarism misconceptions that many of those students' problems could have been solved if they had organized their research appropriately.

It is easy when you are doing research to get so focused on what you are reading that you forget to note where the information comes from.

There are many different ways for you to organize your research. Go to the Library's Organizing Your Research guide, and it will walk you through three different options for organizing your research: note cards, source tables, and outlines. Click each of the green tabs to learn more about the different organizational styles.

Regardless of which organization style you choose, you will need to make sure that you save enough information to find the source again later. This could include:

  • Author
  • Title of source
  • For websites, the URL or name of website
  • For journals, the date, volume, and issue number
  • For sources from databases, the name of the specific database. Also, always use permalinks when saving information from databases.

This information will be helpful for when you complete your citations in MLA format.
