This Youtube video was made in 2010 at a photography and printing superstore called Harpel's Inc. in Lebanon, PA. This is the same store that John had his portrait picture taken in and developed. This store did many photos and prints for a whole variety of subjects, not just soldiers in the army. At 7:06 is when Rick Harpel mentions the company having done army portraits.

Also at this Time - Historical Context

This here is an image of a serviceman in his uniform. This is just one, of countless portraits and photos men and women took of themselves during wartime. We don't know who this man is, but we know what he could have done, and from that, we see the character of a truly brave man who signed on to serve for something bigger than himself.

Inferences and Additional Questions

When did Sgt. Jack Dolin have his picture taken?

What did Jack 'finish' down in Frederick? Isabel refers to Jack having his picture taken at some undetermined point, but knowing that it wasn't in Frederick, so what was Jack doing while he was in Frederick?

How did Isabel get the nickname "Tags"?

Want to Dig Deeper?

Not all portraits were of serviceman. In letters prior, Sgt. Dolin makes comment on pictures he could get from Margaret. Many servicemen, and people in general, had pictures of their loved ones in wallets, compasses, on the dash of a vehicle, under a pillow. A picture may just be a photo of a moment in time, but its the love in hearts and the memories and thoughts in our minds that bring that person closer to us than physical distance ever could. For soldiers, that regular picture of their girl is what could've kept them sane in the toughest time of their lives.
