Hi! My name is Allison Read and I am a research and instruction librarian here at Upstate. I created this guide to help you appropriately find and use sources in your German Global Migration class. Use the tabs at the top of this page to guide you. I have made every effort to to anticipate what you may need help with, but I am not perfect! If you think of anything else you need help with that is not in this guide, please feel free to contact me. My information is in the box above, but you can also ask for me in person at the library reference desk. It is also possible to book a one-on-one appointment with me through Book-a-Librarian!
A case study is a research method used to study a certain person, group, or situation. In your case, you should write about one aspect of Global culture that you found interesting in this class or that you always wanted to investigate further.
A comparative essay is an essay that explains how two subjects are either similar or different. In your case, you are asked to write a comparative analysis of two countries/cultures.
Come up with a thesis.
Choose the essay structure. Use the point-by-point method or the block method. Let's say you are comparing apples and oranges. In the point-by-point method, you would compare one aspect of the apple and then move on to that same aspect of the orange. You would then continue to go back and forth between apples and oranges. In the block method, you would discuss all aspects of the apple before moving on to all aspects of the orange.
Give roughly equal weight to both sides.
Use linking words. Examples are: additionally, despite, furthermore, likewise, nonetheless, even though, etc.
