Laura Karas Portfolio: Classes & Syllabi

This private guide was designed to showcase the library work of Laura Karas

English 101 & 102 Syllabi

At the University of South Carolina Upstate our English 101 and 102 courses are taught with 5 broad-based Information Literacy Standards in mind, see the Information Literacy LibGuide for our interpretation of the ACRL Information Literacy Standards.  By teaching the students the basic steps in research we try to enforce the Information Literacy Standards.  Much of the teaching I do for English 101 and 102 classes follows the LibGuide as a template and integrates the course assignments as examples of the steps in research and the library resources.  Both English 101 and 102 follow a very similar path.  I have chosen to keep the guides very similar but when I teach I focus on separate parts of the guides: English 101 - I focus more on the topic side of the searching, along with boolean searching and keywords. English 102 - I focus more on database searching, the difference in types of Periodicals, and how to find scholarly articles.

Speech 201

I worked with the Communication faculty to create a LibGuide that has their OER text embedded within, along with ancillary information in forms of videos, infographics, and additional readings.

EDSC 441 - Middle School Curriculum and Methodology - Dr. Lee

This is the first time I have taught this course and I chose to model it off of my simple English 102 Guide since the notes from the professor (a new adjunct faculty) indicated that the students needed a refresher of the basics in library research.  My outline for instruction (see below) follows my course-specific LibGuide, highlighting the resources that the students will need for the assignments.  This 45-minute class covers the basics of research and focus on using one key subject-specific database.
