LIBR 201 - Strategies for Information Discovery: Background Information

A guide to USC Upstate Library resources for students of LIBR 201.

Background Information Sources

Background information is general information about a topic that supports the general consensus and recognized facts about the topic. Reference books are often an ideal source for background information because of their authority, synthesis of generally-accepted information, and concise overviews of topics. This page provides links to some of the library's more important reference databases.

Current and Controversial Issues

Searching for Reference Books

The library has a large collection of print reference books as well as reference ebooks that can be found by using the Library Discovery Search.

  • For print books you can search for: ref and [keyword related to your topic] (this finds the reference location code in the record and so limits your results mainly to books in the reference collection)
  • For ebooks, you can use generic words such as: encyclopedia and [topic], or: dictionary and [topic]
  • Make sure your keywords are broader topics: nursing rather than nurse practitioner; music rather than rap music
  • Access ebooks through the "Availale Online" or "View Online" links

Specialized Online Reference Sources

Several of these databases provide a variety of sources in addition to reference books. They are all meant as places to begin research in their respective subjects.
