Advanced Search
  • Try different keywords to get different search results
  • Use Boolean AND, OR, NOT connectors to connect terms
  • * is a truncation symbol in the library catalog. Cat* would bring up "cat" and "cats," while vot* would show results for "vote," "voter," "voting," etc. This works in other parts of words as well. Col*r would display results for "color" and "colour."
  • The ? is a one-character wildcard. Wom?n will display results for "woman" and "women."

The video below gives a brief overview of how to find materials using the library's search engine.

Ebooks

Electronic books are accessed through the library catalog record. In a list of results, they are identified by "Available Online" written in green. In order to read an electronic book:

  • Click on the title in the results list. This opens the record for the book.
  • Click on the link under "View Online" in the record.

Boolean

Boolean logic is fundamental to the search functions of internet search engines (like Google) and library databases (like Academic Search Complete and JSTOR). As a student, correctly utilizing a few key Boolean operators will provide better, and more accurate, search results.

  • AND AND is also implied by a blank space between words. (e.g. Geriatric AND Driving) Results will contain both the words Geriatric and Driving
  • OR (e.g. Geriatric OR Driving) Results will contain one or more of the words Geriatric and Driving
  • NOT (e.g. Elderly NOT "Middle Aged") Results won't contain the search term "Middle Aged"
