Service Learning – This concept refers to community service experiences or projects that are linked to academic courses or separate credit-earning opportunities. These initiatives can take place in the wider community surrounding the university or be integrated into co-curricular activities. During these experiences, students engage in structured service activities that address specific community needs. They also reflect on their service to deepen their understanding of course material, develop a greater appreciation for their field of study, and foster a stronger sense of civic responsibility.
At USC Upstate, we characterize service learning as an educational approach that integrates service with credit-bearing courses. It stems from a community need, is defined in collaboration with a community partner, is anchored in disciplinary content, and involves thorough reflection.
