Hispanic and Latino Culture and Literature: Home

There is often confusion with the terms Hispanic and Latino. Many people use them interchangeably, though they actually have two separate meanings. Hispanic refers to people who speak Spanish and/or are descended from Spanish-speaking populations, while Latino refers to people who are from or are descended from people from Latin America.

Latin America generally refers to territories in the Americas where the Spanish, Portuguese or French languages prevail: Mexico, most of Central and South America, and in the Caribbean, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and Puerto Rico.
