Jazz: Fake Books and Transcriptions

A Guide to Important Reference Sources and Online Resources Available at USC Upatate.

Jazz Scores

The Upstate Library has two kinds of jazz scores: transcriptions of recorded performances published as full scores, and arrangements of jazz standards published as lead sheets or condensed scores in "fake books."

Most scores are shelved in the Ms along with books and media. Full size scores will generally be found in the Oversize section (in compact shelving). Smaller formats, including miniature scores, are shelved in the main circulating collection. Be aware that some anthologies may be shelved in the MLs or MTs. Music that is primarily pedagogical in purpose is shelved in the MTs. Check location codes in the catalog carefully.
