Juvenile / Children's Literature: Fractured Fairytales & Nursery Rhymes

Guide to finding and using Juvenile Literature in the USC Upstate collection

Fairy Tales - Fractured, Altered & Retold

The tabs above have listed many of the classic Fairy Tales, Fables, and Nursery Rhymes.  Each tab has books listed that represent the classic tale, retellings and fractured versions of the tales.  This list is always growing and new titles are being added regularly, remember to come back and check it out.

  • A fractured fairy tale takes the original tale and changes setting, characters, points of view and/or plot. They often play with language to add humor. An example may be The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs as told by A. Wolf, a variation of the three pigs.
  • A retelling is when a story line and character relationship stay true to original but has substantial changes to the original, for example the ethnic variations on Cinderella such as The Korean Cinderella.
